Get to know Betty and Neal: The first time Neal and Betty Hambleton set foot on Hilton Head Island, they had a special feeling. Spellbound by the natural beauty and active lifestyle of the Lowcountry, they knew they would someday call this place "home." Over the next twenty years, the Hambletons vacationed in paradise, dreaming of life's future possibilities. "I fell in love with the peacefulness and serenity," said Betty. "From the hanging moss and the pines to the friendly people who live here, it was a culture-a feeling-that I immediately wanted to be a part of," she added.
Driving over the bridge to return to the "real world," became more and more difficult. But demanding careers and four daughters called the Hambletons back to their home in Potomac, Maryland, where Neal had a thriving law practice, specializing in real estate, and Betty balanced family activities with a fulltime federal government career.
In 1993, Neal and Betty took a step closer toward a new way of life by purchasing a lot in Indigo Run Plantation. "It was the best decision we ever made," said Betty. "It made us feel like we were becoming a part of the community." Their dream came true in 1999 when they made the move to the island and settled into their retirement home.
The Hambletons' genuine passion for Hilton Head Island and the surrounding communities is just as strong today as when they first visited, over 20 years ago, only now they are truly at home. Whether golfing, enjoying theatre rivaling "the big city," dining with friends or strolling the pristine beaches, they both agree that this is the life. "It's about living to your heart's content and finding time for the things you love-living a vibrant, yet relaxed life," said Betty.
Hilton Head Island is a perfect place for families to spend time relaxing together. The Hambletons' daughters and eight grandchildren love coming to the beach. "Each time they come to visit, we are building family memories-the kind that last a lifetime," said Neal. "It's wonderful to be able to share this special place with our children and grandchildren. They have the opportunity to learn about nature and to appreciate a way of living that encourages its preservation for future generations."
